Wooden Bowls

They begin with a log...
Log splitting (12348 bytes) Rough shaping (9791 bytes)
...and are rough-shaped with an ax. The woodgrain guides the shape, so each bowl is unique.
Hollowing (11327 bytes)
A special-purpose adz is used to hollow out the center.

 

Rough shaping complete (12289 bytes)

Final shaping (14773 bytes)

Final shaping is done with a draw knife and spoke shave, before final hand sanding and oiling.
Once there is a rough shape, each bowl must be allowed to dry naturally for several months.
