They begin with a log... | ||
...and are rough-shaped with an ax. The woodgrain guides the shape, so each bowl is unique. |

A special-purpose adz is used to hollow out the center. |

Final shaping is done with a draw knife and spoke shave, before final hand sanding and oiling. | ||
Once there is a rough shape, each bowl must be allowed to dry naturally for several months. |
